This episode featured many battles: Rufus vs. Serena, Rufus vs. William, Rufus vs. Lily, Serena vs. Jenny, Eric vs. William, Dan vs. Vanessa, Blair vs. the girls from Columbia…to just name a few.

Serena and Rufus, who have mostly gotten along in the past, clash over William. Serena wants him around and Rufus not so much. Lily sides with Serena: if their kids want their father in their life again, so be it. Except Eric doesn’t want it. He repeatedly gives William the cold shoulder, indicating that being here now doesn’t make up for not being here before. Serena, however, is happy to have her dad back in her life and is fearful of losing him again. After finding out that Rufus has prevented William from subletting an apartment in their building, she essentially declares war and tells her dad that if he wants his family back–including Lily–he should fight for it and she’ll help.

Serena, still POed by Jenny’s actions in the last episode, has words with her step-sister again. S has decided to move back home, supposedly for Lily’s sake, but Little J has taken up residence in her bedroom. Rufus tells S to take Chuck’s room, since he’s MIA from the household. Turns out, Chuck isn’t just living apart from the family, he also hasn’t come to visit Lily at all despite knowing she’s sick. When Nate clues Blair into this fact, she realizes why it is and calls Chuck out on it. He lost Bart, he lost Elizabeth–he doesn’t want to lose someone else. Seems Blair’s point isn’t lost on him, as he goes to see Lily later that night in one of the episode’s most touching scenes.

Chuck has also done something for Blair. She just doesn’t find out right away. When she visits the Columbia campus, she runs into the girls she met a few weeks back. They are still enamored by her and, when they assume Blair is transferring, she doesn’t deny it. The girls are eager to see her be the bitch they’ve heard about for so long and convince her to send in a tip to Gossip Girl that Jenny’s been dealing drugs. Soon the girls learn Blair’s not a student at all and embarrass her via Gossip Girl. But Blair ends up running into an admissions counselor who says she has indeed been admitted. How so and what does this have to do with Chuck? Nate reveals Chuck submitted an application months ago on her behalf, knowing she was miserable at NYU but had too much pride to admit it and transfer. Blair seems touched and texts him her thanks before letting the girls know she is attending the school in the fall and they better not cross her again.

Dan, apparently an avid Gossip Girl reader, confronts Jenny about dealing drugs. She admits she did but doesn’t anymore. He suggests she come clean to Rufus before he finds out through someone else. She reluctantly agrees but before she can carry through, someone she sold to blasts her for giving her the wrong drugs. Rufus overhears and refuses to let her explain. Earlier Chuck and Jenny had discussed how healthy Lily looks. After the mix-up with the pills and doing some research, Jenny tells Chuck there’s something not right about Lily’s medication.

After failing to get over their conflict about Vanessa’s acceptance to the Tisch writing program, Dan sets up rules about what they can and can’t talk about. Tisch is off-limits. And so are internships and jobs, which is why Rufus is the one to tell Dan that Vanessa is up for a 3-month internship with CNN…in Haiti. When Dan asks her about it, Vanessa admits she sometimes wishes they were just friends so they could talk about things like they used to. Still, she’s not going to accept CNN’s offer because the time apart would do too much damage to their relationship. Dan convinces her to do what’s best for her, noting that she can’t let fear and worry about their relationship hold her back. V sets off to let CNN know her decision, and Dan’s fake smile crumbles.
