5 Songs that Should’ve Been in Season 2

by Angela on May 25, 2009

in Blog,Commentary,Features,Music

Well, the season is over which means no more “Music from insert episode title here” posts. But over the last season, there have been some moments where the audience missed out on some prime music selection. Here are some songs that should have been featured this season.

1. TV on the Radio – “Dancing Choose”
- to be played during Dan scenes in Ep 210 Bonfire of the Vanity

It’s suprising that TV on the Radio have not been played on Gossip Girl yet. These guys are totally NYC and their album, Dear Science was called the “Best Album of 2008″ by Rolling Stone magazine. Any song could have been used from the album for the show; but “Dancing Choose” is especially topical:

He’s a what? He’s a what? He’s a newspaper man!
And he gets his best ideas from a newspaper stand!
Fom his boots to his pants, to his comments and his rants,
He knows that any little article will do!

That totally sounds like Dan and could be played in any Dan-centric episode. For instance, the episode where Dan turned into a weredouche by almost publicly exposing the Bass family secret would be a good choice.

2. Ciara ft. Chris Brown – “Turntable”
- to be played during any generic club/party/fast-tempo scene in any episode

If “Turntable” was used in a scene, think of the controversy Gossip Girl could have stirred by using a Chris Brown song during his Rihanna beat-down phase! Moreover, Ciara was on America’s Next Top Model, so the CW had the opportunity to approach her.

Fantasy Ride (released earlier this month) is not as solid as Ciara’s previous albums, but the album still offers some gems like “Like a Surgeon”, “Never Ever” and “Turntable”. This song sounds hot; it’s produced by Danja – the same person responsible for Britney Spears’ “Gimme More”. He makes a good dance song and this song would’ve been great for Gossip Girl.

3. Grizzly Bear – “Cheerleader”
- to be played during beginning montage in any episode

This song is reminiscent of the Department of Eagles’ song “No One Does It Like You” (see Ep 214). Actually, some Grizzly members are in Department of Eagles. But, if you don’t know who Grizzly Bear is, then you need to listen to Yellow House, which got Grizzly Bear a lot of attention back in 2006. “Cheerleader”, like Yellow House, is lush and with expansive layers. Veckatimest, the album with this track, is set for release on May 26th; thus, the band would have had a reason for licensing the song for any April or May episodes of Gossip Girl. Overall, the song would have made a good addition to any slow beginning montage.

4. Lady GaGa – “Love Games”
- to be played during the Vanessa and Chuck sex scenes in Ep 220 Remains of the J

Lady GaGa is not a stranger to GG. We’ve heard three songs from her: “Paparazzi” (Ep 201), “Poker Face” (Ep 205) and “Money Honey (Ep 220). This song should be used, not because Lady GaGa is particularly good – but the lyrics would have made the scene where Vanessa goes back for a second round with Chuck more snarky.

Let’s have some fun, this beat is sick.
I wanna take a ride on your disco stick

I am sure Chuck’s “disco stick” is hours of entertainment.

5. Cyndi Lauper – “All Through the Night”
- to be played during ending montage in Ep 224 Valley Girls

This is classic 80s and Cyndi should have been represented in the Valley Girls backdoor pilot. Given Blair’s love of Cyndi Lauper, this would have been a good song for the ending montage with scenes of Blair, Serena and Lily. The song has such a happy tone that would have worked with the scene (well except for the country synth solo in the middle of the song).

Were there any songs you would have liked to hear on Gossip Girl this season?

Actually, there were 10 songs that i think they should have featured in the show:

    1. Frankmusik – 3 Little Words
A ending montage with a happy vibe.

    2. Animal – Mike Snow
An opening scence with blair and serena walking on
    the streets shopping.

    3. Control – Kid Sister
The show could use a little more hip hop to living
    up their party scenes.

    4. The Cold, The Dark, and the Silence – Sea Wolf
They used one of their songs before and it was pretty awesome. I think this could be used for a scene at a bar or in Blair’s room with Blair and Serena hanging out.

    5. Tube Socks and Trust Funds – Vampire Weekend.
This song has a summery vibe to it and would great for a Summer Kinda Wonderful-esque episode.

    6. Foundations – Kate Nash
Blair and Serena getting ready for a party or event, or just hanging out. Or an opening montage of an episode.

    7. Skeleton Boy – Friendly Fires
Perfect for those party scenes of upper east side debauchery.

    8. Fistful of Sand – The Bravery
This band was used excellently in The Wild Brunch, and i think they should be utilized more. Their songs have the New York spirit infused in them.

    9. Le soleil est pres de moi – Air
Also reminiscent of season 1, the calmness of this song would be a great addition to the songs used, instead of some of those indie bands.

    10. No Sex for Ben – The Rapture
Another hip hop song, which the show has been lacking in that department. But would be a great party song, in my opinion.

I think those songs would make some Gossip Girl scenes even better. Keep Up the great work guys. the site is incredible and so are the podcast.

I hope you like my choices.

    Stay cool.

I agree with Bry97. Fistful of San and No Sex For Ben would have been perfect.

i kind of like oren lavie, even though no one has heard of him except itunes and the chronicles of narnia. i think his songs could be used a lot because he is
    -jewish (hello cyrus)
-vannessa’s comment about the chuck bass version of narnia, the song he did for that movie could so have been background music
-i kind of like the indie-ness mixed with mainstream idea
-the pierces became one of my favorite artists after the first season and part of the 2nd season they could have done something with jenny in the books, cause it so says that “i would never fall in love with a boy in a rock and roll band” the pierces sold out to get up and i was ok with it, thats what everyone does
