Spoiler TV broke the casting scoop earlier this week about Vanessa Abrams mom finally being included into Gossip Girl. Why now? She’s going off to college a time where we see most kids break away from their parents, but now they are bringing her back to the UES? Why wasn’t she around when Vanessa was home schooling herself? And why doesn’t Vanessa harbor any resentment toward her parents for not being around during her formative years?
It’s been a topic of discussion in many podcast episodes; why haven’t we seen Vanessa’s family? We should have at least seen Ruby since that is who she was residing with. But we never even saw where Vanessa lived. (Maybe they were trying to save on the set design.) What could Vanessa’s mom actually bring to the storyline?
Most importantly, they are looking for an African-American, 40 year old woman who is self-righteous and “off-the-grinder”. What is off-the-grinder supposed to mean? Is that someone who is bitter with life? Or someone who is made at “The Man” and the way he runs society? This casting description kind of makes no sense.
But who should play Mrs. Gabriella Abrams: should they pull a famous person like Lisa Bonet or Kimberly Elise? Or should they go with a no namer to fill the roll?
