Episode #1 – Summer, Kind of Wonderful

This recap is by SOAPnet.com

“Gossip Girl” is back, and summer lovin’ is in the air. Nate, for example, is having a steamy affair with a married woman named Catherine, while Serena mopes about her break-up with Dan. And even in a dorky hat, Chuck’s been charming the bikini tops off his female fan club.

When Gossip Girl reports that Blair is Hampton-bound, it looks like the party is over for our favorite “Bass-tard,” as Blair so eloquently puts it. He goes to meet her with roses at the jitney stop (jitney = bus, FYI), but she disembarks with a handsome traveling companion, whom she kisses — before looking meaningfully at Chuck. Chuck looks surprised, which makes you wonder: Has he MET Blair Waldorf?

Yep, Blair’s going out of her way to make Chuck jealous, but she confides to Serena that she’s only known James (handsome bus dude) for a few days and finds him incredibly boring. She spent the summer heartbroken over Chuck, and she can’t wait for him to leave the Hamptons so she can dump James and go to the White Party stag. But Chuck’s been hearing conflicting stories about where James goes to college, so he decides to have his private investigator (who’s on his speed dial, because Chuck is awesome like that) do a background check. He texts Blair that he can’t wait to see her and James at the White Party. Looks like Blair has to keep up her charade a little longer.

Back in the city, Dan’s seeing a new girl (and often two girls) every night. He’s back in the game in a big way, except for a bad case of writer’s block. When he’s unable to finish a new story about a tragic love affair (wonder if he named the characters “Stan” and “Karena”?) he decides he needs to reconnect with Serena in order to get some closure … or find out if he made a mistake.

Meanwhile, Li’l J is working her li’l ass off at an internship for Waldorf designs, but her manager, Laurel, doesn’t give her much credit. When Jenny shows Laurel a dress she made in hopes that Laurel would wear it to the White Party that weekend in the Hamptons, Laurel just scoffs. Jenny swallows her pride and calls Eric to apologize for being a bad friend and beg him for an invitation to the White Party. Being a true sweetie pie, he forgives her and agrees to take her as his date. He even introduces her to Tinsley Mortimer, who compliments Jenny’s design in front of her bitchy boss, winning her major points.

Serena’s at the White Party as Nate’s date, but only so he can scope out his GF and her husband. Nate and Serena share a fake kiss for Catherine’s benefit, which OF COURSE Dan arrives just in time to see. When Serena tries to explain, Dan says he doesn’t want to hear another one of her flaky excuses. But two of the girls at the party choose that very moment to bust him for dating them at the same time (on the same night, in fact). Toppled from his usual moral high ground, Dan forgives Serena, and they decide to give it another go. So, to recap: They were off again, and now they’re on again. The saga continues.

Blair attends the party on James’s arm, but he notices (finally) that she only has eyes for Chuck. When he accuses her of using him, she apologizes and admits that she thinks he’s boring. James apologizes too, because he hasn’t been honest with her. He WAS lying about college. In fact, he’s not even named James. His name is … Lord Marcus! He’s not American at all, he’s an English nobleman! And, like so many dashing young aristocrats, he just wanted to be treated like a regular guy and meet a girl who would be real with him. That’s why he loves it when Blair says things like “I think you’re boring.” What a catch!

Since Chuck’s plot to expose “James” has backfired, he too has to resort to honesty. He tells Blair he only stood her up in Tuscany because he was scared, and he begs her not to leave him. She says she’ll stay if he can say those three little words. But he only gets as far as “I,” so she drives off with Lord Boyfriend.
