Episode #19 – The Grandfather

Chuck has been trying to get in contact with Blair the whole week, but she’s heard nothing from her. He wants to know what is going on with her because this is more than having her public business out for the world to see. Serena tells him she was rejected from Yale.

Yale, the only thing she wanted more than me. That’s painful. – Chuck

Bex and Lily are looking at art when Rufus calls. Bex tells Lily she appreciates her being so cool considering the Rufus situation and how they use to date. Lily says it’s fine, but she really didn’t know they ever dated. Lily then asks Rufus to make a list of people they have been involved with to avoid any further blindsiding.

Nate, Dan and Vanessa are hanging out at Nate’s house. Apparently Nate’s cousin Tripp invited Nate to the Vanderbilt family reunion. Nate doesn’t want to go because his family abandoned him when he needed them the most. Vanessa convinces him to go. Nate brings Dan and Vanessa with to the Vanderbilt compound where Nate finds out that his grandfather didn’t know he was coming. It was a surprise Tripp worked up, but when grandfather sees him; he’s glad that he’s there.

Chuck goes to see Blair at her house and she’s enjoying an early afternoon drink and Carter is there. Blair says Carter is helping her, but Chuck believes it’s a way for Carter to get back at him. Carter brings up Elle which infuriates Blair even more.

Back at the Vanderbilt’s, Dan and Vanessa are receiving the family history tour. They don’t seem too interested. His grandfather asks what Nate’s future plans are and he says he’s still waiting to hear back from colleges. He says he doesn’t expect much because applications were due during the time of his father’s take down. Grandfather says he’s really proud of the way Nate handled this situation but Nate seems surprised. He didn’t expect that from him.

Serena and Blair are out shopping when Blair confesses it’s exhausting being Blair Waldorf. She says she was an over-achiever and she’s learned she can’t control and plan everything. Blair says Carter is helping her try something different. Blair then puts on a pair of sunglasses and walks out of the store without paying for them. Serena gets concerned and calls Chuck to tell him to ask Carter to meet with him. Chuck says he has investigators working to find something on Carter, but he can’t find anything. Serena tells him just to arrange the meeting. Chuck then wonders what Serena has on Carter to make him go away.

Serena goes home to find Lily making her list. The list is long and has some famous people on it. She tells her she can’t give that list to Rufus.

Nate and his family are having a game of touch football and Vanessa meets Maureen who is Tripp’s fiancé. She tells Vanessa of the first time she ever visited there and how much things have changed with Tripp. She says Grandfather can be quite persuasive. Vanessa looks a little skeptical because she knows Nate is being groomed from something better.

Welcome to the next 30 years of your life. – Maureen

Carter shows up to the meeting with Chuck and finds Serena there.

What is this? Good cop, Bass cop?”

Serena says she wants Carter to leave and gives him a ticket to Dubai. He says they can’t make him go, but Serena brings up something (in vague terms) about Santorini and still having the phone numbers of the cops who questioned her. Carter agrees to leave but says him leaving town isn’t going to instantly get their friend back. She’s still going to have issues. Carter leaves and Chuck wants to know what happened in Santorini, but Serena won’t say. She’s more interested in finding Blair.

Rufus and Lily are at dinner dancing around the subject of the lists. Rufus finally hands his over which has 12 people on it. Lily seems surprised. Instead of handing over her long list, she gives an abbreviated list and Rufus looks relieved. He thought it would be much longer.

Dan and Vanessa return from the reunion and Dan is nursing a touch football injury.

It was less Gatsby and more Fight Club.

Dan notices something is up with Vanessa and asks her to tell him what’s up. She worried about the expectations that are being laid out for Nate because she doesn’t think that’s what he wants. But she doesn’t want to say anything because he just reconnected with his family, but doesn’t want him to be pushed into something he doesn’t want. Dan encourages Vanessa just to talk to him about the situation.

Serena and Chuck go to Dorota to find out what party Blair is attending. Dorota won’t tell them because Blair gave her strict instructions not to tell. Dorota ends up yelling at Chuck in polish. Serena finally gets through to Dorota about Blair maybe being in trouble and they are just trying to help her. Dorota finally gives up the information.

Vanessa and Nate talk and he assures her nothing is going to change. He received a phone call from Tripp who wants Nate to meet him and Grandfather at some place. Nate declines because he’s on his date with Vanessa, but she encourages him to go. They were eating pierogi, but she says they will have plenty of time to do that this summer in Russia, Prague, etc.

Blair is begging with some guy to get into Sarah Lawrence. He says he won’t budge because she hazed a teacher. Blair says it was just one time, but he still says no. She’s crying and begging when Serena and Chuck walk in and find out what she’s doing. Serena doesn’t understand why Blair didn’t tell her she was still trying to get into a good school. Serena is glad that Blair didn’t give up on trying getting into school, but Blair said that was it. She’s not going to try anymore and storms off.

The next day at the Vanderbilt reunion party, Chuck and Serena go to find Blair. Serena isn’t sure why Blair would be there, but Chuck insists she will be there somewhere. When they find her, Blair is acting out and telling everyone’s secrets; including the secret of Dan having sex with Rachel in the costume closet. Chuck is keeping an eye Blair to keep the “social eulogy” under control and tells Serena to go find Dan.

Vanessa is getting a drink when Tripp tells her about Nate’s internship at the Mayor’s office for the summer. Vanessa is confused because she thought they were going backpacking during the summer. Vanessa doesn’t believe it’s anything that Nate would want and thinks Grandfather is making all the decisions. When she asks Nate about it, he says he hasn’t made any decisions about anything yet, but it is an amazing opportunity for him.

Blair tries to semi-seduce Chuck when she gets him alone. Chuck says he knows her better than he knows himself and she kisses him. He then tells her this isn’t the Blair he wants; he wants the old Blair. She gets upset and says she’ll never be that Blair ever again and he’s lost his chance.

Nate finds Blair sitting outside on the terrace and they have a heart to heart about old times. She says she remembers when he brought her there when they were little and they talked about how perfect life was going to be. Blair says she doesn’t know who she is anymore and they both admit to feeling lost. Nate says you can’t fight against who we are so they should just stop trying.

Serena finds Dan and slaps him because of the situation with Rachel. Dan makes excuses about how they were broken up and how Rachel wasn’t his teacher, but Serena feels liberated and starts to laugh at the situation. Dan apologizes for what he’s done though.

While Rufus is trying to find a tip for the Chinese food him and Lily ordered, he finds her real list in her purse. He’s upset and confronts her about it.

Vanessa tells Nate she believes in him too at the same time when Grandfather is making an announcement about Nate getting the internship. That is when Vanessa finds out that Nate accepted the internship. She’s very upset and leaves the party to go back to the Humphrey loft to eat pizza. And she contemplates whether or not she and Nate actually broke up.

Chuck tells Serena he is losing Blair. Serena tells him he needs to fight for her and he needs to make her feels safe if he wants to be back in her life. Chuck goes to Blair’s house but Dorota won’t let him see her. She said he will have to wait until morning. Chuck seems to be ok with that until he sees Nate’s coat. Meanwhile, Blair and Nate are upstairs together and when Nate tries to leave she asks him to stay.
