Episode #20 – Remains of the J

It’s morning on the Upper East Side and Serena is calling Blair to make sure she’s up and moving about since the whole not getting into Yale debacle. Blair tells her she is at home eating French toast with Dorota, but Blair walks in front of a taxi and the driver blows his horn at her. She finds out she’s in the same vicinity as Serena and hides. She doesn’t want her to know she’s out going to Nate’s house.

Dan gets a welcome packet from Yale and a fan letter from some guy who read his story in the New Yorker. The fan wants to know Dan’s opinions on one of his stories. Rufus hasn’t made his usual breakfast. Lily wants everyone to go over her house for breakfast that morning. She wants to talk. Out getting pastries for the family breakfast, Serena runs into Poppy who is sporting a new look. She has short hair and is really tan. Poppy mentions how she is only in town for 48 hours because Gabriel, her new boyfriend, had to come back for business. They have been in Spain for the past weeks. Poppy attempts to catch up with Serena but finds she’s still in the same place she was the last time they talked: in high school with the high school drama. Serena mentions he’s throwing a party for her friend and Poppy seems intrigued until Serena mentions it’s a sweet 16 party. When they part ways, Serena is left feeling a little embarrassed and feeling young.

At the van der Bass’s house, Lily has gathered everyone and Chuck is there too. But he leaves and Dan pokes a little fun at him.

What does Chuck Bass do at 8 am? It’s not like you work out. – Dan
I do my cardio in the evenings. – Chuck

Lily and Serena tell Jenny they want to throw her a party, but Jenny doesn’t seem excited. She says things are different this year and she just wanted to keep it small with just them and Jonathan and Vanessa. Serena seems really disappointed with this but Lily says she will cancel the caterers. Everyone just leaves at that point to go on with their day. Rufus opens up that letter from Yale to find out Dan has been denied for financial aid.

At school, Serena is talking to Eric about the party. She doesn’t understand why Jenny doesn’t want to have one. Eric says maybe it’s about Jenny being worried no one would show up. He also says since Jenny has returned to Constance Billard she hasn’t really made that many friends. Hazel, Iz and Nelly tell Serena about Penelope’s party on the same night and are glad that Serena canceled hers so they wouldn’t have to feel bad about not going.

He says he’s been watching her and she said if he was any good at it she would know she was just bringing him breakfast in the morning. Chuck says it makes sense Nate and her are just friends because there was never any spark between them. Blair gets frustrated and doesn’t know how to respond. But she does put Chuck in his place.

Chuck, don’t act like I didn’t fight for you. I did, hard and for a long time, so please for me now that we’re over; I’m exhausted. – Blair

Back at the loft, Dan asks about his Yale packet and Rufus lies and says he left it at Lily’s. Lily recognizes the lie and asks him what’s going on. Rufus tells him that Dan was denied financial aid. He says he expected some of Dan’s tuition to be subsidized. Lily offers to help pay but Rufus says no. Lily then says maybe he should sale the loft and move in with her. Rufus asks if they are ready for that; Lily says she just thought it was the next step for them.

Blair takes to Nate about Jennifer Anniston, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. She is trying to drop hints that Nate should break up with Vanessa and he picks up on them. Serena invited Poppy along to the dress buying for Jenny to Missoni. Jenny says this is more than she expected but is willing to try on something. When Jenny leaves, Serena admits to Poppy that she’s in a rut.

If you’re not on the arm of a designer at the Met one day and lazing around the Maldives on a yacht the next, what kind of girl are you?

She says Serena shouldn’t be making and breaking up with a high school boyfriend and feuding with a frenemy. Serena says she wants to get back out there and Poppy says this party would be a good way to do it. Inviting the right people is key. Serena tells Poppy that Jenny doesn’t really want the party though. Poppy thinks Jenny does want the party, she just needs a little hand holding. She says any 16 year old girl would love to have a party like one Serena would throw. Serena is convinced and calls the caterers to tell them the party is back on.

Meanwhile, Blair is waiting impatiently for Nate to come back. She’s really wondering what is going on because he’s been out with Vanessa for such a long time. Dorota doesn’t do a good job at calming her fears though. Nate finally shows up, but he’s not there to stay. He just wanted to come by to tell Blair what happened and says they can hang out over the weekend. Blair tries to go in for a kiss, but Nate kisses her on the forehead instead. When Nate leaves, Blair tells Dorota that Chuck is right; there is not spark or passion between her and Nate.

Dan answers the phone thinking its Vanessa for the party, but it’s Brooklyn Realty. He thinks Rufus is selling the loft to move in with Lily. He doesn’t tell Jenny though. They go to the party with board games and chili.

Serena calls Blair to ask if she’s coming to her party and Blair quickly corrects her saying its Jenny’s party. Blair tells Serena she’s been spending a lot of time with Nate lately and tells her about the Nate and Vanessa break up. Blair says Nate is her destiny and Serena is happy for her as long as she’s happy. She thinks Nate is good for her because there’s no drama. Blair takes offense to that going back to what Chuck said about them not having sparks. Eric interrupts the phone call because he needed to tell Serena about what is going on.

Jenny is excited everything is going well between Lily and Rufus. Dan tells Jenny about the realtor calling and Jenny doesn’t think Rufus should sell the loft. Jenny doesn’t think it’s going to happen. They are Humphrey’s.

They arrive at the party and find out it’s not the intimate affair Jenny originally wanted. Jenny is upset because she didn’t want that type of party and doesn’t want those people there. Jenny again tells Serena this isn’t the party she wanted, but Serena isn’t listening. Eric tells Jenny it was less about Jenny’s birthday and more about the fact Serena could prove she could throw a good party. Jenny gets upset and texts the party information to Gossip Girl.

Serena asks for Jenny’s help but she tells Serena she invited them to the party; it was the people on her guest list. Serena goes to Dan for help but Dan doesn’t want to help because he’s surrounded by a group of girls, but he goes anyway.

Nate is concerned about Vanessa and Chuck, but she says it’s just a physical thing. Nate tells her not to let Chuck talk her into doing something she will regret. Blair starts to talk smack in front of Vanessa about how they are at a party and people just hang out at parties, but later on there might be something more. But Nate cuts her off before she can say anything else.

Blair pulls Nate into a room and tries to seduce him, but he’s not having it. He says maybe they didn’t work out the first time because they weren’t friends. Blair says this week they became friends and she wants to kiss him, but Nate doesn’t want to do anything in Chuck’s room while they wait outside. He shuts her down and she’s upset and leaves. Vanessa intercepts Nate when he’s looking for Blair and gets a good dose of reality from him.

Vanessa and Chuck wake up in the morning together. Vanessa is getting dressed and tells Chuck not to mention this again. They seal it with a kiss…and then they make out.

Mistakes, we all have them. They usually start with the best intentions; like trying to protect someone. Or getting some distance from the person you’ve become. Sometimes we don’t even know what mistakes we’ve made to get us where we are or we figure it out just in time to make it right again. But every mistake happens for a reason; to teach you a lesson you would other never learn. And hopefully you’ll never make that mistake again. Lucky for me, that never happens.
