Episode #3: The Dark Night
The episode starts of with Gossip Girl giving tips for beating the heat with the appropriate video montage.
First tip was drink plenty of liquids and it showed Chuck drinking some hard liquor. The second tip was stay out of the sun and it showed Jenny walking around with clothes and fabric. I’m assuming for work. The third tip was avoiding all physical activity and it showed Dan and Serena making out on the street and Blair and Marcus making out at Blair’s house.
Blair is looking to hook up, but Marcus isn’t. Marcus calls Blair a delicate little flower. Blair is upset because there isn’t any fire or passion in their relationship. Marcus says Blair is very special to him and he wants the moment to fit her. Which led Gossip Girl to give us the last tip, a cold shower!
Vanessa is trying to figure out if she should call Nate after he’s bailed on her many many times. She consults Jenny about the situation and Jenny tells her to get on the phone to call him because she’s not the sit and wait girl.
Catherine is playing dress up Nate. She says she is so glad what they have didn’t end. Nate tells her he needs more money. Catherine acts like she’s bothered but she’s really not because she tells him to meet her at the Mercer for lunch. We all know that Nate needs to work for his money.
Dan and Serena are together and talking about letting everyone know they are back together. Serena thinks Blair’s party is the perfect place because they will only have to say it once. Dan seems a little apprehensive about the plan, but eventually gives him. They stop for a kiss and someone snaps a picture of them kissing…and it ends up on Gossip Girl.
At home a screaming Jenny greets Dan because she is so happy they are back together. Rufus is also happy for him, but asks Dan if they have worked out their issues. Dan says they will work them out. Not sounding too sure himself.
Nate and Vanessa are trying to find time together, but can’t seem to get it together. Nate is filled with family obligations and Catherine obligations. Nate says he wants to be with Vanessa but can’t really back up his talk because he can’t really cancel his plans. When he sees Vanessa is a disappointed when he can’t bring her lunch at the gallery, he says he will cancel his plans. But he looks worried because he knows he is canceling his lunch plans with Catherine.
Blair tells Serena about how perfect Marcus is and how much she likes him. She also mentions, unenthusiastically, how Marcus hasn’t pressured her once about sex. Serena asks Blair about what she thinks about her and Dan getting back together and Blair lets it be known she’s not happy. Blair says she’ll be happy for Serena after her and Dan have talked about their issues and are still together.
Nate goes back to Chuck to ask for money, but Chuck says he doesn’t have the money anymore. Nate knows he can’t get any help for Chuck and says he’ll find another way to get the money. Nate notices that Chuck seems to be off his game a little. Chuck says he’s hoping to turn it around with a Japanese stewardess.
Dan and Serena are talking about Blair being judgmental about their relationship. Dan seems to agree with what Blair is saying about them talking about their issues. But the conversation is interrupted when Serena receives a phone call from her mother on her honeymoon.
While Serena is talking to her mom, three tween girls approach Dan and ask him how could he trust Serena because she’s just going to lie to him again. Another girl says that Serena doesn’t respect him. Two girls are on Dan’s side while one blonde tween is on Serena’s. When Serena returns to her lone supporter says she shouldn’t be with Dan because he had sex with Georgina and his lips touched that girl. Apparently, everyone has been keeping up with their love saga on Gossip Girl. Dan and Serena agree to talk about their problems, but Serena tries to avoid the conversation and puts it off until later.
The Duchess calls Blair to find out whom Nate is hanging out with after seeing Nate didn’t come for their lunch date. Blair immediately knows its Vanessa. Blair then goes to the coffee/art gallery where Vanessa and Nate are trying to spend time together. But Nate really isn’t feeling it because he’s distracted because he knew he missed his date with Catherine…and he wants to get out of the arrangement with her.
Blair says she’s there to invite Vanessa to the party as a surprise for Nate. When Vanessa steps away, Blair tells Nate she didn’t want to sit by and watch Nate have an affair with her boyfriend’s mother. Blair says she is trying to push Vanessa and Nate closer together. Nate doesn’t really buy Blair’s story because he knows that’s too nice for Blair.
When Blair leaves, she calls the Duchess to tell her Nate is brining Vanessa to the party. Also, she tells her whatever she’s planning for Nate, the bedroom floor is off limits.
Seems like Nate knew the true Blair and it was confirmed when he saw Marcus and finds out that Catherine is coming to the party because Blair and the Duchess have become such fast friends. Nate immediately leaves a message on Vanessa’s cell disinviting her (well, canceling their plans once again.) Vanessa doesn’t know what to make of it and turns to Rufus for advice. He gives her two options, the mature option to talk to Nate about her feelings or the immature option, to pretend like she never got the message because she left her phone at the gallery and go to the party anyway. Vanessa chooses the immature option.
Chuck tells Serena he can’t get it up for sex with his random skanks. (He didn’t call them skanks, but I did!) Serena says he’s not over Blair. Chuck denies it, but thinks he needs to have one last go round with Blair to clear his pipes. Serena says he can’t use Blair as sexual draino.
Eleanor Waldrof fires Jenny because she walked in on Jenny critiquing the Waldrof dress to the model. Eleanor claims she needs people she can trust working for her and tells Jenny to pack her things.
At the party, Chuck tires to push Blair’s buttons by saying Marcus doesn’t meet Blair’s needs. Blair lies and says they have an amazing sex life. Chuck then gets closer to Blair and whispers in her ear asking her what names Marcus calls her when they make love or if he touches her a certain way. Blair really starts to play into it. Her words are saying one thing, but her body is saying another. Chuck asks her to have sex with him. She turns him down and says he is disgusting…but she is still holding his hand.
Dan goes to pick up Serena and the lights start to flicker. They both agree they should hurry and leave, but they get stuck on the elevator when the power goes out.
There is a citywide blackout.
Dan and Serena are stuck and Dan calls for help. They tell him he will have to wait. Serena said he should have mentioned her name, but Dan denies it would do any good. They have the same argument about how Serena lives the life of privilege. Dan calls back for help; they say they will send someone right out to help. Dan was wrong and it stirs the pot even more. There is major tension in this elevator.
Catherine is glad that Nate showed up because Nate has been blowing her off to hang out with Vanessa. Nate once again is trying to get out of the relationship/business deal with Catherine but she’s not going to let her toy go. Especially a toy she is paying for. Vanessa walks in and sees Catherine holding Nate’s hand and gets upset. Nate chases after her and they go talk.
Vanessa and Nate find a quiet place to talk and she says she thought he was different from Blair and the others. She didn’t sign on to be in a creepy love triangle with him and someone else’s mother. Nate then tells her that Catherine is giving him money. Vanessa asks for the whole story, which Nate tells her. She then encourages Nate to break off the relationship and says she forgives him for everything. Nate then leaves to find Catherine to end it all.
Catherine is trying to find where Nate and Vanessa ran off too, but Blair tells her she can’t keep Nate and Vanessa apart. The Duchess then asks if Blair is completely satisfied with Marcus. Blair lies and says yes, but the Duchess knows better. She knows about their sex life (which is kind of creepy) and says she won’t sacrifice that part of her life. Nate makes her feel alive and she’s not going to give that up.
Catherine goes looking for Nate and finds Vanessa in the library. Catherine says she knows Vanessa must really care for Nate because she’s willing to forgive him and wait for him. Catherine says she really cares for Nate too and Vanessa has no idea how she feels for Nate or what she would do to keep him.
We don’t know then what Catherine says but it was something to make Vanessa leave. Nate goes looking for Vanessa but finds Catherine instead. Catherine tells Nate Vanessa had to leave. Nate sees Vanessa leaving and tries to stop her. Vanessa then tells Nate that Catherine really loves him and he shouldn’t break it off with her. Nate is really confused at this moment.
Meanwhile, Jenny tries to leave Eleanor’s office, but Eleanor won’t let her leave in the black out. Eleanor asks her opinion on a dress and Jenny doesn’t give her honest opinion at first but eventually tells the truth about the design. They bond over Jenny’s first Eleanor Waldrof dress she bought at a thrift shop and Jenny helps Eleanor recreate her design.
Blair tires to get Marcus to help her feel alive. She asks him to meet her in her room. He doesn’t seem too set on the idea, but she doesn’t give him a chance to answer. Blair waits in her room for Marcus. Chuck comes into the room and speaks with a British accent so he can pretend to be Marcus. Chuck asks Blair to blow out her candle. They start making out, about to have sex until the lights come back on and Marcus walks in the room and sees them. Marcus punches Chuck and asks Blair if she really didn’t know it was Chuck kissing her. She says she knew.
Marcus leaves and Blair chases after him. This is where they have it out for everyone to see and hear. Marcus says Blair only wants him for his title. She says that’s not true; that she wants him and she wants him to want her. He says he does want her and Blair asks him to show her. Chuck walks in just in time to see Marcus and Blair kiss. I think the kiss was supposed to be passionate-come-get-me-kiss, but it really wasn’t.
Serena and Dan argue more in the elevator about Serena being who she is and Dan being against everything that she is. Serena says she forgives Dan for Georgina and he says he forgives her. They both realize they can’t change who they are…and they know their relationship is over. They share one last kiss. They both say without the words they still love each other, but they both know when Serena steps out of the elevator everything is over. Dan and Serena are dunzo.
Rufus comes to find Jenny at Eleanor’s workroom with his date. He was worried about her during the blackout because she didn’t answer the phone. Jenny picks up to leave but Eleanor stops her from leaving saying she’s not fired.
Chuck is hooking up with a random girl (not so random to us, I swear that’s Ann from America’s Next Top Model, Eva’s cycle.) But Chuck is still having his problem because he is upset about Blair.
The episode ends with Vanessa and Dan talking about the night’s events. Vanessa confesses to Dan that Nate is a gigolo and that Catherine would tell the FBI where Nate’s dad is hiding if he tries to leave her. Vanessa says she didn’t really have a choice with letting Nate go.
