3.19 – Dr. Estrangedlove
This recap is brought to you by www.teendramawhore.
Against Dorota’s advice, Blair plans an afternoon party to essentially meet eligible men. When no one shows, she accuses Chuck of putting a fatwa on her–a ruling of sorts, encouraging men to stay away from her. Never one to back down from a challenge, Blair vows to find a man who will kiss her and vows to make sure Chuck will know about it. Knowing Chuck’s fatwa has spread throughout the city, she tags along with Dan and Vanessa to a party in–gasp–Brooklyn. Of course, Chuck is there, too, and Blair tries to make him jealous with a Columbia student named Cameron. Cameron is not only into Blair but willing to kiss her for the sake of making her ex jealous. Even though that was Blair’s goal, she backs out. She lets Chuck know that she’s not going to kiss a guy simply because he broke her heart. When she’s ready to kiss someone again, she will, on her own terms. Back at home, Blair lets Dorota know she was right: it was too soon to be seeking out other men. Blair retreats to her room where she sadly reminisces about her time with Chuck, namely their fateful night during the season 1 episode, Victor/Victrola.
Aside from being the catalyst for Blair going to the party, Vanessa and Dan are in their own orbit…and none too happy to be there together. When Dan is rejected from the Tisch writing program, Vanessa admits she applied, too, and was accepted. And not only accepted, but she was the only one accepted. Dan is surprised but handles it well, insisting they celebrate later at a party. Before said party, Dan runs into Willa, a classmate, who knew Vanessa applied to the program and who also seems to know that she did so with a writing sample based on Dan’s work, rather than an original one as required for the program. She also reveals that the one spot came down to Dan and Vanessa, which means, Vanessa essentially stole Dan’s spot and used his work to get there. Conveniently, Willa’s dad is on the Board of Directors and she says she can get Vanessa kicked off. Dan is against this and tries to tell Willa so at the party. It seems, however, that Willa is more interested in Dan. When he rejects her advances, she tells Vanessa that Dan was going behind her back to have her kicked out of the program. Dan says he wasn’t quite doing that but she went behind his back first by applying for the program. Their fight goes unresolved and seemingly remains so, despite Dan reaching out to her later on with a phone call.
Lily and Serena return from Palm Beach, only to find that William (Lily’s ex-husband and Serena & Eric’s father) has beaten them to their penthouse, much to Rufus’ chagrin. Serena’s first face-to-face meeting with her father in 14 years takes a back-seat to the revelation Lily has for Rufus: she hasn’t been cheating with William. She’s been treated by William, for an unnamed cancer. Rufus is understandably surprised and upset but is more disturbed by having William back in their lives. Lily assures Rufus that William is the reason why she’s healthy now. That is, until she gets a call from William letting her know she’s not-so-healthy after all. Rufus suggests using a different doctor but both Serena and Lily want William to stay on the case.
Serena and William follow-up with their first meeting with a second in his hotel lobby. He tells Serena a little bit about where he’s been over the years. When Serena’s says point-blank that he left them, William says it wasn’t quite like that. He reveals that when he initially left, he was setting up shop for them in Tibet, where he would practice and the family would come to live. At some point, Lily decided to divorce him instead. Serena is a bit overwhelmed by this information but even more overwhelmed later when she finds out not only has her mother’s illness returned, but her father is leaving town. It seems, though, they will keep in touch a bit. William certainly has unfinished business, making a call later to someone and saying their plan isn’t working and he needs another prescription for Lily.
As if having a ill mother and a back out-of-nowhere father weren’t enough deal with, Serena is also stressed by her relationship with Nate. As if often the case, though, this is partially from her own doing. When she returns from Palm Beach, she doesn’t tell Nate what she was doing there or why she can’t really talk even now that she’s back. Nate loses his patience, pointing out how she always keeps secrets with promises to tell him later. He says he’s tired of waiting. And he doesn’t wait. Instead, he occupies his time hanging out with Jenny and Chuck. Jenny uses the growing distance between Serena and Nate to get closer to him, with Chuck’s help. Jenny tells Nate he deserves much better than Serena and goes to kiss him–just as Serena walks in, finally ready to discuss her problems with him. To Nate’s credit, he stops the kiss before he even knows Serena was there. But the damage seems to be done, as Serena and Nate argue about her lack of communication. Serena points out that she did leave a message with Jenny that she would be going away but Jenny denies it. The she said-she said doesn’t last too long as Nate orders Jenny to leave. Serena tearfully lets Nate know what’s truly wrong: her mother is sick and she doesn’t know what’s going to happen.
