3.21 – Ex-Husbands and Wives
This recap is brought to you by: www.teendramawhore.com
All the characters this week came together for a common cause–the Humphrey and van der Woodsen families–but in typical Gossip Girl fashion, not everyone was on the same team. The plot was essentially Rufus vs. William. Who was the liar? Who was the dedicated father/husband? At the start of the episode, it seemed like Rufus had some explaining to do while William would be Lily’s protector. Holland alleged that she and Rufus had an affair, shocking him as it wasn’t true. Blair, Jenny, Chuck, Nate and Dan–interesting combination, eh?–set out to prove that Rufus didn’t cheat while Serena strove to keep them from ruining her newly reunited family.
Blair and co. discover that Lily’s medication was being prescribed not by Dr. van der Woodsen but by a psychiatrist. And that psychiatrist happened to be Holland. (Dun dun dun…) As the episode went on, they piece together various parts of the puzzle: Lily really was sick months ago. William really did cure her. When he did, he fell back in love with her and decided to win her back–through devious methods, of course. He purposefully sent Lily that letter from earlier in the season in hopes it would wreck her marriage to Rufus. When it didn’t, he recruited Holland to try to get Rufus to cheat. When he didn’t, he decided to falsely tell Lily her cancer returned so he could spend more time with her and wiggle his way back into Serena and Eric’s lives, thus disrupting Lily’s marriage with Rufus and getting his family back. Two birds, one stone.
Jenny ends up playing the role of Benedict Arnold, letting William know that his plan has been discovered and Rufus (and therefore Lily) will soon know all. William quickly makes up a story about a patient being ill and suggests Lily, Serena and Eric all go to Palm Beach with him. Before they can leave, Dan tries to tell Serena about her father’s shady ways. She calls her dad out it and he maintains his innocence before retreating to the lobby of the building.
In comes Blair and co., ready to reveal all to Serena and co. Serena finally realizes her dad had been dishonest this whole time. The realization hits even harder when she finds he is no longer in the lobby but on his way out of town. Seeing as William had committed a crime–with false prescriptions and whatnot–Blair and co. send the police after him. Serena meets him at an airport terminal and tearfully says goodbye, letting him know that she loves him and will cover for him. She sends him away in a cab as the cops approach.
Serena, after disagreeing all episode with Nate over her father’s intentions and Rufus’ innocence, finds solace in one Mr. Dan Humphrey. Jenny, who wishes the Humphrey-van der Woodsen family actually fell apart so she could have her old Brooklyn life back, moves into Nate and Chuck’s. And Blair decides to give Cameron a chance, even though Chuck has just given her the ultimate ultimatum: meet him atop the Empire State Building the next day or lose him forever.
