Eric and Jenny are busy keeping Serena’s secret for the summer. Nate arrives in the city via helicopter with Bree, but he doesn’t know her last name. He finds out that she’s a grad student at Columbia, so they will be going to the same school in the fall. They finally realize who each other are and they know there families are enemies.
Blair walks in on Chuck about to kiss his lady friend and Blair tells her off. But it’s all just a game they play to keep the relationship interesting.
Vanessa and Scott are hanging out. Dan is supposed to meet up with Vanessa to talk about the summer she spent in Eastern Europe, but is distracted when Serena arrives home surrounded by paparazzi.
The next morning the van der Humphrey’s sit down to breakfast and Rufus tells them Lily has surprised the family by getting a table at the van der Bilt charity polo match in Connecticut. Serena leaves and Dan follows her to let tell her he knows what happened over the summer. Serena says it was a few nights of harmless fun and nothing more.
Chuck is looking for a place to live but isn’t having any luck. He says that Lily did a great job of running the company until he could take over so maybe she should just continue. Nate is upset because he feels like his family is trying to pigeon hole him into life. He wants to do his own thing and not worry about his family. Nate also talks to Chuck about the game playing he is playing with Blair and asks if Blair is only playing along for Chuck. If she is, then things can get sticky, but Chuck says Blair wants to play along.
Vanessa and Dan finally meet up and we find out that Vanessa and Nate did hook up one night in Prague…but it was no big deal. She seems really interested in hanging out with Scott and wants Dan to meet him officially. But Dan says he’s busy helping Rufus. Dan also pulls out a designer wallet filled with money and forgets his expensive sunglasses at the café. He says he was taking the subway but Vanessa sees him getting into a limo when she tries to give him back his sunglasses.
Chuck and Blair meet up to go to a model “go see” to find their next victim to humiliate. Blair wonders where Chuck has been because she’s been calling him for an hour and he says he’s been with Nate. They stand outside of the modeling agency and have the talk about how Blair doesn’t want to play anymore. Chuck says he just wants her to be happy however that is achieved.
Serena is trying to avoid the paparazzi but runs into Carter. She doesn’t want to talk to him and he says she can’t avoid him forever. But Serena unties her dress and the paparazzi have a field day and she’s avoided Carter this time.
Vanessa meets with Scott to talk about Dan. She doesn’t understand why Dan is keeping secrets from her. She found out that Dan is going to the polo match via Gossip Girl when he said he was going to help Rufus. Scotts says it seems like Vanessa is close with Rufus, maybe he should call him and ask for an invite to the match…and maybe she could get a plus one because he’s never been to a polo match before.
Jenny and Eric return to the loft for the first time where they talk about all the pressure that Rufus is under. He was left to take care of two kids that aren’t even his as Lily leaves to take care of her sick mother. Apparently, CeCe’s treatments are going well and Rufus is keeping it together.
Back at the penthouse, Rufus and Dan are waiting on Serena. He wants to know what happened to Serena this summer. Serena says she didn’t mean to lie to him, she just didn’t want him to think she “went off the rails” again. She said she just got a little carried away during the summer and it wouldn’t happen again. Since Serena has become such a face in the tabloids, she’s been asked to throw out the first ball at the polo match and she gladly accepts.
Dan asks Serena who that guy was in all of the photos with her and she says it ‘s Carter Baizen. They had traveled together and had a thing, but it was over and now he’s stalking her. She tells Dan that if he sees Carter to keep him away from her at all costs. Dan gets concerned and immediately calls Blair, who doesn’t answer the phone.
At the polo match, Serena promises Rufus that she will stay out of the public eye. Everyone is there. Nate is there with Bree, Chuck and Blair, Eric and Jenny and Vanessa and Scott.
Nate introduces Bree to his grandfather and hands back the keys to the Porsche that was sent to him earlier. Nate says he doesn’t want any part of it. Bree stands by stunned because she didn’t know it was a family event.
Chuck and Blair are bored at the match. A model walks by and Blair comments on all of her features. Chuck says if they were still playing the game she would be a great score. But they both agree they aren’t playing the game anymore.
Vanessa tries to apologize to Dan but he’s too preoccupied. Carter shows up and Blair comes and steals him away from the conversation. Blair and Vanessa exchange words, but Dan still leaves with Blair to handle Carter.
While this is going on, Scott introduces himself to Rufus. He seems stunned, but they share some moments together about Rufus’ music.
Blair and Dan have Carter served with a restraining order. Carter points out that it’s against Blair and Blair says she is going to be plastered to Serena’s side. Serena shows up to find out what’s going on and they tell her about the restraining order. Carter asks Serena to tell them the truth, but she won’t. And at the right time, Nacho, the polo player, pulls Serena away to throw out the first ball of the match. But Serena causes a scene and races off on a horse and Carter follows close behind. Everyone is left there trying to figure out what is going on.
Nate goes to look for Bree who is in the barn. She tells Nate that he may be trying to break free from his family but she’s trying to get back in good terms with hers. If she would have known it was a family event she probably wouldn’t have come because being seen with the van der Bilts won’t put her back in good graces with her family. Nate says he really likes her and agrees to keep a low profile. He’s had plenty of practice at secret relationships.
Carter says everything that Serena is doing is a cry for attention. Serena is getting attention from everyone except the person she wants attention from; her father. Apparently they found her father but he didn’t want to talk to her. Carter said her father is stupid for not wanting her and he would never leave her. They kiss and then they go off to hook up in the woods.
Nate tells his Grandfather that he won’t take the internship for the fall. He just wants to do his own thing. And to his surpise, Grandfather is okay with it. He says he just wants Nate to be happy. He guesses the reason Nate and Bree are hiding out because they are trying to keep a low profile and he doesn’t think they need to be looking for a cab to get back to the city. So Grandfather gives Nate back the keys to the Porsche, which Nate says he’ll give back in the morning. Grandfather calls Tripp to tell him he found a way to do something to the Buckleys.
Blair is looking for Chuck but the guard says that he left. Blair asks if he left alone and the guard says a blonde woman left not too soon after him. Blair things they were together.
Vanessa yells at Dan because of the person that he has become. She said she doesn’t care if he’s rich, but if he’s going to be in that world he should at least be himself. And she tells Dan she liked that guy and she hopes that is guy that is going to show up to NYU.
Blair goes to find Chuck and the girl, but he’s alone. He said he left because he had a headache and left her several messages. Blair didn’t get them because she left her cell phone on the table. Blair wonders if they need the drama between them to be a couple because he’s Chuck Bass. But Chuck says he’s not Chuck Bass without her.
Vanessa vents to Scott when they are back in the city. Scott says her and Dan have been friends for too long to let one argument get in the way. He also says the Humphrey’s are just going through a hard time right now and she should just give them time. Vanessa wants something good to happen that night so she kisses Scott and he’s glad that she did.
At the end of the episode, Rufus is paying off the papparrzi to keep Serena out of the papers but the photographer says there is one guy they haven’t been able to get a hold of. That’s because he’s sitting with Serena making a promise to her that at least one of those pictures will show up in the tabloids. Serena makes a call to her father and says she won’t stop trying to get his attention and she just wants him to call her back.
