4.03 – The Undergraduates
BACK TO THE UPPER EAST SIDE! — On her first day at Columbia, Blair (Leighton Meester) attempts to gain membership into an ultra-exclusive social club, Hamilton House, but she’s in for a few big surprises. Serena (Blake Lively) begins to suspect that Juliet (guest star Katie Cassidy) is intentionally sabotaging Serena’s life and that it may have something to do with Nate (Chace Crawford). Rufus (Matthew Settle) is worried about Dan (Penn Badgley) and decides to take matters into his own hands. Ed Westwick, Jessica Szohr and Kelly Rutherford also star. Norman Buckley directed the episode written by Amanda Lasher (#403).
This week Gossip Girl teaches us that best friends will forever walk that fine thin between friends and enemies. It’s the first day of school for Blair and Serena and they each have different things on their minds. Gossip Girl’s site is under construction which infuriates Blair because she wants everyone to know what he life is like at Columbia. On the other hand, Serena loves that Gossip Girl is down because she gets a clean slate, at least for now. But the one thing both girls want: A place in the prestigious Hamilton House, an undergraduate club. Plus, it wouldn’t be Gossip Girl without a party and this week it’s about Fashions Night Out!
First things first, Rufus is struggling to tell Dan that Milo isn’t his baby. But when Dan finds out he handles it pretty well, probably a little too well. Dan figures out that Georgina left him with the baby and immediately jumps into dad mode. He goes to CPS but decides foster care will not be the place for Milo. Dan steps up and decides that he will take care of Milo himself, even if he’s not the dad. Vanessa decides to step in too. She doesn’t want Dan to have quit school so she says she will move in and take Georgina’s place. It will be fine because most of her classes are in the morning. Maybe Vanessa didn’t realize what she was getting into, but it was only short lived. Georgina returns to claim baby Milo after Gossip Girl spotted her on a beach in St. Barts. Georgina explains that Milo’s real dad’s wife was the one who was going to kill her. She hired three guys named Boris to kill Georgina, but called it all off when Dan signed the birth certificate. On a side note: we also learned Georgina met this guy on her flight to Russia where by the time the plan landed they were platinum members of the mile high club. And yes, Georgina was approached to be a Russian spy, but she turned the offer down.
But this is all just a cover because you’re really a Russian spy like those women in Westchester. – Dan
No. Not that I wasn’t approached because I was. – Georgina
Chuck is back in town and Eric and Rufus don’t like it. They would prefer that Chuck stay as far away from them as possible, but Lily keeps pulling them back in. Lily is ready to move on from the Chuck/Jenny debacle and Rufus is heading to that point too. But right before leaving for Fashion Night Out, Eric spills the beans (because he seems to be the only person that remembers) that Chuck tried to force himself on Jenny when she was a freshman at the Kiss On The Lips party. This was the last straw for Rufus. Chuck is very apologetic and says he would never do anything to hurt Jenny, but Rufus thinks Eva should hear what kind of man Chuck really is. Eva over hears this, but Chuck calls her another social climber that wants a piece of Chuck Bass…and she’s a nobody. Chuck’s last ditch effort to save his relationship with Eva failed, but he was kind of put in the place where he had to Eva about his past. Side note: Blair had a run in with Eva at Carlos Meile and tells her that Chuck will send her back to where she belongs because she doesn’t belong in Chuck’s life or on the Upper East Side. She also tells her accessorize with gloves because no manicure can mask those peasant hands.
I told you to come home, I didn’t say it would be easy. – Blair
Serena and Blair are ready to start their school year off right and Hamilton House will be their meeting place. There’s only one problem. Serena doesn’t get a key to join the club, probably because Juliet, Nate’s new lover, is the key master. But there are some familiar faces, Penelope is back to back stab Blair and of course Blair has new Columbia minions. When Serena is kicked out of Hamilton House she tries to call Dan, but he’s too busy with Milo. She also tries to talk to Nate, but he’s not having it because he’s upset with Serena. Or maybe he’s just too focused on Juliet. Take your pick. Later on when Serena and Juliet run into each other, Juliet tells her the reason she didn’t get into Hamilton House is because Blair called the committee to give more information about Serena. It seems like that sex tape Serena almost made with Pete Ferman has come back to bite her. Meanwhile, Juliet is trying to keep Serena and Blair apart. Earlier in the day, Serena and Blair had made plans for a first day dinner, but Juliet keeps Blair from going because of a house event. Blair lies to Serena and says she wants to stay in, but Gossip Girl shows Blair enjoying her martini on the steps.
Did you really think she was going to let you steal her spotlight at Columbia? – Juliet
Serena plans to confront Blair at Fashion Night Out and it turns into a fight…or we think. Dorota videos Serena and Blair having a fake fight about the information that Blair gave to the committee. Blair sent the video to Gossip Girl. Penelope passes it a long to everyone and Juliet decides to broadcast it on the television so everyone could see. When Juliet thinks the fight has gone on long enough she goes to Blair’s defense, but Juliet is surprised to see Blair and Serena waiting on her. Lily made some calls to Bass Industries board members who are on the committee for Hamilton House and found out Serena was always on the top of the list to get a key. Juliet was behind the plan to keep Serena out. Juliet is forced to give up her key. She’s embarrassed but she can’t leave.

Nate tries to go after Juliet when Serena stops him. This is when Nate finally grows a pair and tells Serena that he’s mad at her for cheating on him with Dan and disappearing for the summer. Serena had no right to come back and act like things were ok. When Nate meets with Juliet, she confesses that she didn’t want Serena in the club because she would be around them all day long. She wanted Nate all to herself. Nate has to chase Juliet no more, because now she’s with Archibald.
I thought the only thing he got upset about was badly rolled joint. – Blair
In the end, Serena and Blair worked together to fight a common enemy. It’s a good thing, because Blair has decorated a room for Serena so she can move in with her. The girls will be living together. Eva decides to stay with Chuck and it’s obvious she doesn’t fit in. And Juliet makes a visit to prison. She’s going to see some guy, still no clue who he is, but they have a plan going and it involves our favorite Upper East Siders.
Better watch out kids. Troubles’ moving in and it’s looking to make the Upper East Side it’s bitch. – Gossip Girl
