Hotpipes, a euphemism for acid reflux, was a band played on Gossip Girl. Currently based out of Nashville, TN, half the band actually came from Ohio and the other half from Kentucky. The 5 year-old band, working under their own operation (Liquid Panda Records), has released 2 EPs and 2 albums and they are well established in the indie scene of Nashville.

Featured in episode 2.25 (“The Goodbye Gossip Girl”), their song, “The Future Is Where We Belong”, is played in the opening scenes as Serena and Blair chat. With the help of Dualtone (another Nashville label) and Sugaroo (a licensing firm), Hotpipe’s music was chosen to be played during this episode. The song sets the season finale with a fast paced beat, with a well-placed message about the future behind Blair and Serena’s discussion of their future. You can hear an extended clip of the song in this week’s podcast, or you can find the song as a free download on their website.

Their latest album, Future Bolt (the album where “The Future Is…” was taken from) is over a year old. This is a surprising choice for television, given that the norm is to usually utilize newer music for backdrop. However, the track is very solid, much like the album it comes from.

The album is a record of eight indie pop rock songs. It gives a good, well-rounded view of the band, despite being recorded in the basement of the parents of one of the band members. Future Bolt yields driven pop songs like “This Is Where We Belong” and “Born in a Bomb”, that are clear high points for the album. But the range in tempo on the album, like on “Where is the Shore?” which has a slower feel, is also appreciated.

The album is supposed to be a dedication to the city of Dayton, OH (the city where the band recorded the album) and a testament to what the future may hold for the band. This appears throughout the album in the form of the connecting future/thunder/lightning bolt motifs throughout the songs. “The Future Is Where We Belong” and “Future Bolt” are the best examples of this, revealing some of the band’s attitudes towards their future.

Hotpipes’ album is very accessible and playable. I’ve already listened to Future Bolt a couple of times. And if you like this album, you won’t have to despair over the lack of new material. In my conversations with the band, they are currently writing/recording a new record.

Future Bolts establishes a sound where the band has room to grow into bigger things. Also, the fact that a relatively older album is still getting play in television speaks to the overall strength of the track and album. For any lovers of Franz Ferdinand, Modest Mouse or Spoon, Hotpipes will be a good addition to your music collection.
