This week the ladies of the TGAD talk about Gossip Girl season finale episode 5.24 – The Return of the Ring. Highlights include: how the writers completely changed everything about Gossip Girl, Chuck and Blair being all in, and Serena’s greatest regression yet. Listen to the podcast to hear everything we had to say about [...]
Sorry for the recent weeks of inactivity, but school is such a drag. But, I made good and sacrified my midterm study time to get this up here! And here are the 5 songs heard on Gossip Girl last night.
Harlem Shakes is an indie rock band from New York, formed in 2006. The song from the episode is from their debut falbum, “Technicolor Health”, released in March 2009. They are a pop band, with their music featuring lots of hand claps, high harmonies and a frantic beat. The beginning of the song made me think of a TV on the Radio song, which probably would have fit better with the episode.
2. Albert Hammond, Jr. – “In Transit”
- performed live during Chuck’s party
Albert Hammond, Jr. is now the fourth act to perform live on Gossip Girl, following Lisa Loeb, No Doubt and Sonic Youth (not including Lincoln Hawk!). Albert is also a member of The Strokes, where he usually plays guitar and sometimes lead. “In Transit” is actually from Hammond, Jr.’s debut solo album from 2007 “Yours to Keep”. THe album version of this song is decent, but the life performance seemed hollow. For those who know of Albert, on the TV show, he was completely bald! This is a drastic change from his usual head of brown curly locks.
If you really love Albert Hammond Jr., you can also hear his song “Hard to Live in the City” (also from “Yours to Keep”) in the pilot episode of GG.
3. Peaches – “Show Stopper”
- played during the police raid
Peaches née Merill Beth Nisker, is from Toronto, Ontario and an electronic musician well known for her use of explicit, sexual lyrics. For those who like trivia, Peaches was Feist’s roomate before they both got famous. I quite enjoy Peaches and her music, and GG‘s story is usually scandalous enough to warrant Peaches-own brand of raunch electro, so it was a treat to hear “Show Stopper”. The song is off of Peaches’ newest album “I Feel Cream” (another euphemism?). This song also has the touch of Gonzales (known for his work and touring gigs with Feist), which is noticeable. The whole album is intriguing, layered and complex, and is a definite recommend. Below is the video for “Lose You”, a single from “I Feel Cream”.
4. Son of Dave – “Ain’t Going to Nike Town”
- Blair and Chuck talk about their relationship
Is this song about the shoes? Son of Dave is the solo project of Benjamin Darvill, a former member of Crash Test Dummies, where he played guitar, mandolin and percussion. The song is from his fourth album, “O3″. This song was more background, and the song in it’s entirety doesn’t mesh well with the TV show.
5. Delta Spirit – “People C’mon”
- end montage
This was the one song that I heard on this episode that made me want to know who sang it. The end montage usually features and interesting and catchy song, but watching Jenny throw out her old clothes set to a song about soul searching brought more impact to the scene – which is a sign of effectively used music. Delta Spirit is a band from San Diego that experiments with many different instruments. They also have religiously charged lyrics, as heard in this song. “People C’mon” comes from their debut album from 2008, but the band is working on a second full-length release.
For those wondering about the previous episodes, I will be working retroactively to get the previous week’s music info up ASAP with streaming links of the songs.
