1. Just Jack – “Embers”
- played during beginning montage, end montage and when Blair calls Dorota to make plans
Gossip Girl was seriously pushing Just Jack, a British electronic artist, in the last episode, playing the song at least 3 times. “Embers” is the first single from the newly released album, “All Night Cinema”, and has a great beginning – which, coincidentally is the only part of the song that we hear in the episode. Overall, it is an OK song, but was only used in a minor role for it’s instrumental string opening.
2. Names in Vain – “Summons”
- played when Dan, Vanessa and Georgina talk in the book store
Names in Vain is a hardcore indie rock band from Southern California. The song comes from their most recent EP, “Paper Scraps and Ash”, which is now available on iTunes. “Summons” is a minor key song, which tend to be my favorite type of song. You might enjoy Names in Vain, if you like similar bands like Muse or the White Stripes. Names in Vain is not as polished as those bands, but draws some influence from them. However, if you didn’t notice this song in the episode, it’s probably due to the fact that it was used purely as ambient sounds.
3. Cobra Starship/Leighton Meester – “Good Girls Go Bad
- played when Dan and Blair arrives at the rooftop rager and again when Dan gives a speech at the party
Ah, the famous Leighton Meester song. This song was pimped in the episode twice, but each time neglected to feature Meester’s part of the song. Why? Would hearing Meester sing behind Blair singing would be too much of a mindtrip for the audience? Is it because Leighton’s part of the song isn’t that great? Who knows.
What I want to know is if Pretty Reckless will get the same promotion treatment on GG
4. Cobra starship – “Hot Mess”
- played when Serena and Carter interrupt Chuck’s business meeting with two old guys
More Cobra Starship-goodness. I still see this as the band that made the “Snakes on a Plane” song. Not my ideal music for GG, but someone from the show must love these guys to use them three times in the same episode.
5. Phoenix – “1901″
- played at the rooftop rager
Phoenix is a French alt rock band that has been getting some buzz off their most recent album: “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix”, released in May 2009. This song was probably the most interesting in the episode, but unfortunately, it was used for only background listening pleasure. I highly recommend checking out this song and the rest of the album here
