Music from “The Goodbye Gossip Girl”

The season finale!!! In this episode, we hear lots of bands that we have heard in previous episodes of season 2. For instance, we get more of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs who we last heard on ep 2.21 – Seder Anything. This week we got 8 songs.
1. Hotpipes – “The Future Is Where We Belong”
- opening scene
Hotpipes derive their name from what one feels from acid reflux. This song kicks off the season finale giving driving percussion whilst Serena and Blair discuss how Gossip Girl will affect their future beyond high school and Chuck admitting his feelings. It’s an enjoyable song and it’s off their latest album, Future Bolts. The album itself is pretty solid, giving catchy indie rock. Plus, the album is affordably priced at 8 bucks!
2. Say Hi – “The Stars Just Blink For Us”
- Nate and Vanessa chat and then N invites V and D to his post-grad party
3. Shiny Toy Guns – “Season of Love”
- grad ceremony and ending scene with Bluck kiss
We heard Say Hi on ep 2.23 – The Wrath of Con. Here the song is pure background and doesn’t provide much impact. The next song we hear is the signature song of the episode. We hear it first during the graduation ceremony in the middle of the episode and later during the ending scenes when Blair and Chuck finally kiss. The kiss scene and music worked together as both were equally saccharine, a type of moment that Bluck needed after all this constant go/no-go relationship. This song comes off Shiny Toy Gun’s latest album, Season of Poison, with which they are currently touring.
4. The Handcuffs – “I Just Wanna Be Free Man”
- people are arriving at Nate’s post-grad party
5. Yeah Yeah Yeahs – “Zero”
- partying before GG’s reveals everyone’s secrets at Nate’s post-grad party
We have also heard the Handcuffs before, in ep 2.20 – Remains of the J. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs were also used before, in ep 2.21 Seder Anything. They’re both good party song. These are both used in a pure background capacity. The next song is a repeat from Ep 217 Carrnal Knowledge, Brighton, MA’s “Bet You Never Thought”. Once again, it is pure background and is promptly replaced by score music once Rufus proposes to Lily.
6. Brighton, MA – “Bet You Never Thought”
- Lily and Rufus are high and chat
7. Say Hi – “November Was White, December Was Grey”
- the gathering at the Oak Room
I enjoyed this song. It was played at the Oak Room, where Serena had hoped to ensnare Gossip Girl. The song itself has a sad mood to it which suits Serena’s despondence with her label of “irrelevant”. It also matched Blair’s melancholy with Chuck rejecting her again after finding out the truth about Blair, Jack and New Years. This was the better Say Hi song in the episode and it convinced me that the album may be worth a spin. Both songs from this episode comes from their latest album, Oohs & Aahs.
8. Coconut Records – The Summer
- Nate asks to tag along with Vanessa backpacking across Europe, Dan gets a call from Georgina and we get the first few glimpses of Scott
It seems to be a recurring theme, but we have also heard this band before on ep 222 Southern Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Given all of these repeats, it seems like the music department was pretty shortchanged, opting to use relatively unknown acts in the season finale, which probably deserved some more Top 40 radio hits to pepper up some scenes, like Nate’s post-grad party. I guess licensing those 80′s hits and getting No Doubt back together was costly.
