Dear PTC:
Why are you trying to stop the airing of Gossip Girl 3×09 – They Shoot Humphreys, Don’t They? Gossip Girl is a racy show, but it’s tame concerned to some shows out there. Yes, The CW is marketing the show by using OM3, but I don’t think it’s going to be as racy as you think. First off, it’s The CW and it’s in an 9/8c time slot. Watch With Kirsten already told us it’s not going to be that racy because after all it is The CW!
” ‘Gossip Girl’ routinely depicts teenage characters engaging in promiscuous and consequence-free sexual behavior, and that’s bad enough,” PTC president Tim Winter wrote. “But will you now be complicit in establishing a precedent and expectation that teenagers should engage in behaviors heretofore associated primarily with adult films?”
First off, these kids are free from parental supervision and are in college. They are legally adults and if they choose to promiscuous and have threesomes, then let them do it. You know what? Promiscuity, underage drinking and whatever else you claim is harmful to the children, has been going on long before Gossip Girl and will continue long after it’s gone (and not because they saw three people on a teen drama do it)!
On the last few notes, Winter said, “Finally, you must ask yourself, how does airing this program serve your obligation to serve the public interest?” when referring to Federal Communications Commission’s rule which can yank any “unsatisfactory or unsuitable or contrary to public interest” program.
Secondly, this is television. It is meant for entertainment. Yes sometimes television mimics life and in this case it just might. But why be afraid of something that is shown on television, which I am sure is not going to have the same magnitude of what is done in an “adult film”. This is a teen drama! It’s television; it’s for entertainment. Can you not trust that your teenage knows the difference between reality and entertainment? And how does airing this program serve their obligation to server public interest? We watch Gossip Girl for drama, intrigue, fashion, pop culture…I think having this serves the public interest.
Gossip Girl never claimed to be “the after school special” type of show and it has continued to entertain audiences season after season. Where I can understand where your concern stems from, we must remember it’s just television and it’s for entertainment. Gossip Girl is in the television business and television only exists on ratings. What’s wrong with them trying to grab some attention purely for entertainment? Nothing.
Lastly, It’s been done on other shows too. Sex is apart of television, including broadcast television. Even on other shows teens are taking part in that sex. I know we can all think of other shows where teens are having sex. Life As We Know It, Dawson’s Creek, Veronica Mars, Gilmore Girls…it’s all been there done that. Gossip Girl is just the next in line.
Thanks so much for reading my statement,
Angela*
