I have some sad news to report to all my fellow GG fashion lovers out there, it seems the GG inspired Target fashion line by fashion designer Anna Sui will not be coming to a Target near you anytime soon.
It appears that the cast was getting ready to shoot a scene where the Target bulleye logo would appear in the background as decoration, when the company, specifically the stores chiefs, axed the shot and decided to pull the clothing line from future sale at its stores.
Target apparently did not like the idea of being associated with the show, with the fear of associating its brand with the scandalous nature of the show. According to a source that the Daily News obtained, the execs got nervous being that closely associated with the show, “given the debauchery the characters get into.”
One of Target’s top executives got nervous about being that closely associated with the show, given the [debauchery] its characters get into,” says an on-the-set source. For example, Blake Lively’s character, Serena, killed a man, and most of the characters frequently get wasted, do drugs and have promiscuous sex.
The aforementioned scene was going to be shot with the Target brand in the colors purple and black, the signature colors of Miss Sui. Needless to say the crew had to quickly recover from what they had planned being scrapped at the last minute.
The cast of Gossip Girl was prepared to shoot party scene featuring the Target logos but the all that has been canceled. The party to be filmed at Sui’s flagship store in SoHo was going to feature Chuck Bass and Blair Waldorf. Also, the party was going to feature the Target signage in purple and black, the signature colors of the designer, and Anna Sui was scheduled to make an appearance.
The party was to have occurred last Tuesday, but nothing happened. Also, Target shipped clothes to the set for the girls to wear in the episode. In case you didn’t know, each female character inspired a fashion line to be sold in stores. This apparently threw the Gossip Girl executives a loop because everything was already planned for the episode and publicity wise.
I have to say I am really disappointed in this news. I was very much looking forward to the collection, especially after we were given a sneak peek of the different inspired lines for the four main girls characters (previously seen on this site!). I think its unfair for Target to pull out at the last minute, after Anna Sui went to the trouble to design the outfits and Target already worked out a deal to showcase and sell them in their stores. The outfits will still be available in stores, just not under the Gossip Girl inspiration brand, come fall.
I can kind of understand that perhaps not every company would want to be associated with a show that does not shy away from taboo topics like teen sex, drug and alcohol use, and other vices, but I think pulling the line is a big mistake and is taking it a bit too far. Target knew what the show was about when they agreed to do the line, getting scared that it might hurt the brand at the last minute (which I don’t think it would at all) is very unfair.
So I guess for now we can only look at the Blair, Vanessa, Serena, and Jenny inspired fashions and think if only. And until anything else changes keep coming back to TGAD where myself and my co-horts will be offering you different ways to put your own GG inspired looks together yourself.
