What keeps you coming back to Gossip Girl? Part II

Last year I wrote this post about why I’m so interested in Gossip Girl and why I keep drifting back to the show. Things have really changed since then and the reason I come back to the show is differently than before. Last year it was all about Blair Waldorf. I wanted to see what she would wiggle her way into and out of, but this year the character of Blair has just fallen flat. Season two Blair Waldorf is a way different beast than what we are presented with in this current season. I also mentioned how I liked to see Serena and Blair battle it out and walk that fine line between frenemies and besties and that hasn’t really propagated in this season either.

What is it this year that’s kept me coming back to the show? Season three has been better than season two but not as great as season one but the writing and story of season one has started to emerge during the current season. The things we didn’t expect to happen are actually starting to happen again which is something I truly miss from season one. It seems like the story is getting back on the Gossip Girl path conveniently when the season is about to end which is a total bummer. But what can we do about it?

Another thing that keeps me coming back are things I never thought I would enjoy. Case in point: Dan and Vanessa. These are probably the two most boring people on the show but it’s been fun to watch how they have changed and flourished in new environments and watch their new roads lead to each other. Plus, it’s always funny to think that Dan and Vanessa found love in a threesome with Hilary Duff aka Olivia Burke. (Hilary Duff’s stint on Gossip Girl was great and a definite high point to the first half of season three.) I like being able to see them navigate from friendship to relationship and find all the speed bumps a long the way. In a world of unrealistic things, it’s nice to see something that isn’t so outlandish and unbelievable and it’s something people can relate to.

And then there’s Jenny Humphrey! She has been a hot spot on the podcast all season long. I love watching her turn into Blair 2.0 with a twist. I loved seeing her at school, taking down Eric, trying to stay at the top of the food chain and now she’s moving in on Serena’s man. It makes me mad; it makes me want to hate Jenny Humphrey. But it evokes that emotion that keeps me turning the TV and podcasting about this show every week. I love to hate Jenny and surprisingly, I love to love Jenny too. She’s just got a versitile storyline that other characters don’t have. We like Blair mean and bitchy. We like Serena being the rich girl with a heart. We like Chuck Bass straight up and dirty. And we love Nate Archibald to be the eye candy apple of our eye. When those characters stray from those roles we tend not like it. But we like Jenny as the teen fashion designer and we like her as the UES mean girl. You can never go wrong with Jenny Humphrey. Wit that being said, it’s sad to know that Jenny isn’t going to be written in on the first episodes of season four. And it’s even sadder to see that Taylor Momsen is fueling the fire of Jenny Humphrey never coming back to Gossip Girl. Could this really be the end of Jenny Humphrey because Taylor Momsen is devoted to her music?

So what keeps you coming back to Gossip Girl?

As weird as it sounds, I’m still coming back for Blair.
It’s just her person that keeps me glued to the show. Now that the CW poster is out I can hardly wait until tomorrow to see the new episode!
Where I live, they are showing the sescond season and it’s HUGE, tho their voices suck.

    its blair and chair.
serena is just boring and the whole reason s3 is flat is due to her predominant sl. serenate are flat too.

for me its blair, to…and chuck. even if their relationship sometimes sucks..i still love them…

For me it’s the show as a whole.
Amazing and complex characters, great scenery and beautiful clothes (and people) and the fact that the show never bores me is what I love.
Except when Blair got soft. Screw that.
