Why The Gossip Girl spin-off died!

As we all know Valley Girls, the Gossip Girl spin off, basically died last week to much disappointment around the TGAD family. We never really knew why they chose not to pick the show up that had a great cast, but we are getting some insight a week later from The Ausiello Files.

The powers that be didn’t embrace “the whole 80′s conceit” according the Ausiello from Entertainment Weekly. Ausiello also mentioned that “Dawn Ostroff stopped short of declaring the project dead last week because there’s a chance it could be reconceived down the road.”

Reconcieved down the road to me sounds like they are thinking about the idea of a Gossip Girl spinoff but it’s going to be a lot different. Maybe I’m wrong, but if they didn’t like the 80′s concept behind it all then maybe The CW want something a little more fresh and current. And the younger life of Lily Rhodes just didn’t cut it. Does that mean an “It Girl” spinoff will be in the works?

I can understand The CW not wanting to go back in time to produce a new series because they say their market is women 18-34 (mentioned on their website) and I bet a lot of that is not on the upper end of that. (I know I’ll be we watching the CW when I’m 34 if it’s still around and I hope it is!) They want teen dramas that teens can relate to now and create buzz. That is why Gossip Girl is so popular because it sets trends and isn’t trying to bring old trends back. They have ways to market the show with the use of cell phone promotion (aka Verizon) and computers. That is how the CW picks up buzz for their shows to offset the lower ratings (compared to the larger networks). Maybe that is why those choose to go with the remake of Melrose Place, Beautiful Life and The Vampire Diaries, because those are shows that can translate into today and will create new ways of marketing!

I feel that if the spin off does come back it’s not going to look anything like what was saw in 2.24 – The Valley Girls and it’s not going to have the same people. How would you feel about a change in the pilot to something a little more modern day?

Boo to modern! I say that the whole concept of going back to when Lily was young was a good one now that we saw the cast and how it was starting to play out. I for one do not want to see the spinoff set in another time. That doesn’t make sense.

I’m still crossing my fingers that it comes back midseason!!

huh? i thought you all HATED the spinoff???? i definatly missed something or didn’t get there yet. ALSO: i know nothing about the 80s but i loved both back to the future and that 70s show. so i think back to the future is set then and i’m ok with it being set in the past. AND I AM… WOAH I AM NOT THEIR targeted AUDIENCE. huh? i always thought i was. huh i guess i am too young to like GG, well i am like you Dave and Chris, i defy the norm and the restrictions made by society (or the CW)
